Little Rock opened cooling centers today at four community centers to help people without access to air conditioning weather the intense heat wave this week.

The following community centers are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m Saturday:

  • Dunbar Community Center, 1001 W. 16th St.
  • Southwest Community Center, 6401 Baseline Road.
  • Stephens Community Center, 3720 W. 18th St.
  • West Central Community Center, 8616 Colonel Glenn Road.

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings today for several Arkansas counties including Pulaski, “with highs in the upper 90s with even a few triple-digit readings possible.”

A press release from the city of Little Rock encourages residents to check on neighbors during the extreme heat, avoid outside activities during peak temperatures, stay hydrated and make sure pets have enough water.

A corrected press release was released after the first release listed the East Little Rock Community Center as a cooling center.

“Because of an HVAC issue at East Little Rock Community Center, that location is not operating as a cooling center at this time,” the corrected release reads.
