Hillcrest Little Bakery, the cozy little breakfast and lunch spot on North Van Buren Street between West Markham and Kavanaugh, is branching out from its breakfast roots and offering dinner service five nights a week.

Since opening in 2019 just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hillcrest Little Bakery has become known for its pastries, hearty breakfast dishes and biscuit sandwiches. (The bakery is a perennial favorite in the “best hangover food” category in Arkansas Times’ annual readers poll. The dish pictured below would have worked wonders in my party years, softening the aftermath of marathon nights that started at Pizza D’s and ended when the lights came on at Midtown).

Its footprint in the neighborhood started to expand in April when it began opening daily (Previously, it was closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). In May, a post on the company’s Facebook page said it had acquired a liquor license.

The new dinner menu includes a single and double smash burger; a chicken sandwich; a BLT; chicken wings; chicken strips; a vegan pita; a Cobb salad and a hot Cobb salad. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that HLB will also be offering chicken nachos “along the lines” of what used to be offered at the longtime Hillcrest staple, Cañon Grill, which closed during the pandemic and served nachos featuring huge disc-shaped chips with melted cheese and refried beans.

Additionally, the restaurant will be offering happy hour from 4-7 p.m. during dinner service on select cocktails. Here’s the full menu:

Arkansas Advocate reporter Mary Hennigan, a former Eat Arkansas correspondent during her time covering city news for the Arkansas Times, took in happy hour at Hillcrest Little Bakery Thursday night and said she enjoyed the vibe and will be returning. The heat wasn’t an issue, she said, because the frozen strawberry daiquiri she ordered kept her cool on the patio.

Hillcrest Little Bakery’s breakfast hours are 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Mon.-Fri. and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sat.-Sun.

Dinner is 4-9 p.m. Wed.-Sun.
