Mitch Smothers Credit: Arkansas State Police

Arkansas state trooper Mitch Smothers has resigned after being arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a minor following a single-vehicle accident Thursday night, Arkansas State Police announced Friday.

According to the release, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle rollover wreck on Winn Creek Road at 9:30 p.m. Smothers, 31, was driving with two children in the vehicle. Arkansas State Police Colonel Mike Hagar confirmed no one was injured in the accident.

“I’m deeply disappointed and thank God no one was injured,” Hagar said. “I’ve said from day one that when we mess up, we will dress up and fess up. This is a difficult moment for the Arkansas State Police organization, but we will manage it with transparency and integrity.”

Smothers, a former Razorback lineman from 2012-2015, was transported to the Washington County Detention Center. He was hired by Arkansas State Police in January 2021.
